If Anna Karina were a book, which book would she be?

What book does the "smart, sexy and avant-garde" thing better than The Lost Lunar Baedeker by Mina Loy? Be sure to check out the poem "Three Moments in Paris" (you can read Part I here) and, of course, Loy's famous "Feminist Manifesto" (153-56).

I still haven't read more than twenty pages of Anna Karenina (I just cna't get through it), but I'd like to think that she'd like be a more fun book, a book where she gets to loosen up and actually have a boyfriend! Maybe something like The Grrl Genius Guide to Sex with Other People.

love your site - was recommended here by a friend!

Thanks for checking out the blog, Katherine. I agree with you about Anna Karenina: she would definitely be an impulsive, head-strong book with plenty of exciting adventures...maybe something in the Curious George series?

But Anna "Karina" isn't a typo; she's an entirely different person: a French film star who became famous, in part, for her roles in Jean-Luc Godard's stuff. You can read more about her by clicking on the link in the previous post titled, "You just can't find women like this anymore."

Karina confusion aside, I appreciate your browsing and posting and look forward to reading more of your comments in the future! I'll be sure to hop on over to your blog, too.

Best,
dlb

I thought Anna Karina already was a book. Or am I getting it confused with The Autobiography of Alice B. Tolkein?

is this a joke?

i see right through you, jnp, and your below-the-belt digs at gertrude stein.

though, i fear it is not a joke. in which case, lord help me. lord help us all.

You see so clearly through me, dlb, because I'm not actually there. I didn't post that comment: I wouldn't confuse that dry stick Toklas with J.R.R. the epic fantasist, or be merely inexplicable while trying to be witty. Nope, I don't know who posted that, but it wasn't me.

Er... There's something about the seductress she plays in Alphaville which really gets my motor running. Well, I suppose my motor is always running, but perhaps I put it into third, or something. As a book, I would say that Anna Karina is a little like Franny and Zooey, but she's almost too mature for that. Maybe... Oh! I just got it! Heinrich Boll's "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum." Yes, definitely.

People please! It was me – David – I made the Alice b. Tolkein post. I didn’t realise it would be anonymous. I’m not hooked up, linked in, tied off or whatever I need to be. Anyway, Jeff, funny it may not have been. But inexplicable? That hurts. Hurts real bad. It was very much a top-of-the-head speedy post. I was pondering going with Pam Anderson the Rain King, Tickle Me Elmo Gantry, or I, Claudius Schiffer, but decided in the end to punt the Toklas reference. Needless to say Darcy, I never meant to make any below-the-belt digs at Gertrude Stein. Wasn’t that Alice B. Tolkein’s job? Now, how do I get hooked up to this thing again?

Is it perverse of me to read this and think that I should check out Anna Karina based on the fact that I like Mina Loy?

Oh my! My faith in the universe is restored now that I know David posted the Alice B. Tolkein comment. I swear, for a moment, I really thought the post in earnest.

Richard: yes, it is completely perverse, which is exactly *why* you have to do it.

I'm also sadly unaware of this other Anna (love me some Karenina, though), but for 'smart, sexy, and avant-garde', I always have to defer to Henry and June, or anything else written by Anais Nin. Her erotica is an interesting option, too, particularly for the big screen.

Okay a few things. I confess I do not have much experience with Anna Karina (though I have learned that she and I share our birthdays). Since she went to Paris when she was young, I'll bring up Zazie on the Metro though this is primarily because I like bringing that book up.
If we're just talking fabulous women though, I'll suggest this topic: If Katherine Hepburn were a book, which book would she be? My answer: Me by Katherine Hepburn.
