Which book would call on the phone, say "I can't talk for long, as I've got to go to work," and then just ramble on nonsensically [...]

and keep you talking for ages until you just want to scream "Get off my f***ing phone!" ?

William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom!

I nominate A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, by Dave EGgers.

Oooh. Eggers is a really good choice. Sorry to post on such an old...er...post, but I got your cry for help (albeit second hand) and thought I would help comfort you in your time of tragedy.

All that to say, Libra by Don Delillo. I love White Noise, and Underworld just intimidates the shit outta me (if I wanted to read Gravity's Rainbow, I would). Speaking of which, I think I'll go read Gravity's Rainbow. If you ever blog "Which book breaks your heart over and over again only to have you on your knees begging for it to take you back?" GR would be my answer. Cheers.

While these answers are excellent, I have to go old-school and say Samuel Richardson's _Clarissa, or the History of a Young Lady_. I'm always a fan of the rogue, but that whiny little brat needed some smacking. Or maybe I'm just having flashbacks from the class when we read this, and it's someone else from that time whom I'd enjoy smacking... [ps - totally NOT dlb, of course!]
